GOSPEL READING: 5th Sunday of Luke

The Reading is from Luke 16:19-31

The Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.
And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom.

The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But

Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.'
And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.'
But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

A Prayer For Mental & Spiritual Health

O Master, Lord my God, in Whose loving hands I place my destiny: Help me according to Your mercy, and do not leave me to perish in my weakness.
Strengthen my spirit so that I do not become passive to my own distorted desires.
Since I am Your creation; regenerate the work of Your hands, so that I may find healing in aligning my will with Your will.
Shine Your compassionate face upon me, to lift me up in Your light, and strengthen me for Your service. I run to You as my Protector and God.
Heal my soul, so that I may grow in Your likeness, since this is the very thing You created me for. Drive away from me every dark and despairing thought, and fill me with the grace of Your Divine Light.

For You alone are holy, You alone are mighty, and You alone are immortal…mighty in all things, a might which You give to all who struggle with You against the evil one and against the might of his armies.

For to You is due all glory, honor and worship, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to ages of ages. Amen.

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?"
And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live."

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.'
Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

The Reading is from Luke Luke 12:16-21

The Lord said this parable:
"The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods.' up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.'

But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

At that time, a ruler came to Jesus and asked him,
"Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill,
Do not steal,
Do not bear false witness,
Honor your father and mother. "
And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth."

And when Jesus heard it, he said to him,
"One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."
But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich.

Jesus looking at him said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. "

Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" But he said, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

The Gospel According to Luke 18:35-43

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried,
"Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more,
"Son of David, have mercy on me!"
And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

The Gospel According to Luke 13:10-17

At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

And there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and she praised God.

But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the sabbath day."

Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to water it? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" As he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

“When I was a Protestant, I judged the quality of worship by what it did for me, not what it did to exalt God. The question, “Did I offer to God every obedience that He asked of me today?” almost never entered my mind. Having no specific understanding of how God’s people had always worshiped, I could not have answered it anyway. Rather, I gauged the effectiveness of my worship experience by how inspiring it was for me.
Given my rationalism—which is driven by the desire for new information—I couldn’t measure it any other way.
Liturgical worship is like a refining fire. It never goes out. God shines forth in it, in all His glory. When I come to it, I must yield to the God who is revealed in it. I speak the words He commands.
I sing the songs He calls forth.
I pray the prayers He enjoins me to pray. What He desires, I must adhere to. What He wants done, I must do. There is no room for concern over myself or my wants. What is this worship, other than an opportunity for me to become like Christ?“
