Have you ever thought about this?

In 100 years like in 2123 we will all be buried with our relatives and friends.
Strangers will live in our homes we fought so hard to build, and they will own everything we have today. All our possessions will be unknown and unborn, including the car we spent a fortune on, and will probably be scrap, preferably in the hands of an unknown collector.
Our descendants will hardly or hardly know who we were, nor will they remember us. How many of us know our grandfather's father?
After we die, we will be remembered for a few more years, then we are just a portrait on someone's bookshelf, and a few years later our history, photos and deeds disappear in history's oblivion. We won't even be memories.
If we paused one day to analyse these questions, perhaps we would understand how ignorant and weak the dream to achieve it all was.
If we could only think about this, surely our approaches, our thoughts would change, we would be different people.

Always having more, no time for what's really valuable in this life. I'd change all this to live and enjoy the walks I've never taken, these hugs I didn't give, these kisses for our children and our loved ones, these jokes we didn't have time for. Those would certainly be the most beautiful moments to remember, after all they would fill our lives with joy.
And some of us waste it day after day with greed, selfishness and intolerance.

Every minute of life is priceless and will never be repeated, so take time to enjoy, be grateful for, and celebrate your existence.

THE DEVIL MANIPULATES TRADITION

“Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’’ And Jesus answered and said to him, ‘It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” (Lk 4:9-12)

As we can see in today’s Gospel-reading, the devil tries to use various aspects of Tradition to destroy human life. He uses our faith, Scripture, and even a place of worship, the temple, when he tries to get Christ to kill Himself: “If You are the Son of God,” he says, challenging Him to prove a central point of Christian faith; “For it is written…,” he says, and then manipulates Scripture to back up his murderous suggestion, “throw yourself down from here.” From where? From the temple, which, like our churches, and like our God-given faith and Scripture, was meant to celebrate our life-creating God; to affirm, foster, and save life, rather than destroy it.

If ever our Tradition seems to us to be dragging us down, rather than fostering our will and eagerness to live, to love God, ourselves, and one another, let us make no mistake: The voices in our heads are not our friends, whenever they are interpreting Tradition in death-bringing or faith-destroying ways. From the beginning, the devil has tried to explain God’s actions and words to us in distorted ways, as he did to Eve in the garden: “Has God indeed said…?” (Gen 3:1) The devil’s goal is to plant fear, confusion, and indecision where there was previously faith, wisdom, and courage, and to render us self-isolated (from God and one another) and ineffective in our vocations. Let us chase away any negativity in our heads and hearts this morning, if that’s happening, and scramble into God’s presence. “In the morning hear my voice, my King and my God,” I say this morning, and let God’s good will bless me this beautiful Wednesday.

The Reading is from Luke 8:5-15


The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed,
some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it.

And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.

And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it.

And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold."

And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things,
he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

A pastor asked an older farmer, decked out in bib overalls, to say grace for the morning breakfast.

"Lord, I hate buttermilk", the farmer began. The visiting pastor opened one eye to glance at the farmer and wonder where this was going.
The farmer loudly proclaimed,
"Lord, I hate lard." Now the pastor was growing concerned.
Without missing a beat, the farmer continued,
"And Lord, you know I don't much care for raw white flour". The pastor once again opened an eye to glance around the room and saw that he wasn't the only one to feel uncomfortable.
Then the farmer added, "But Lord, when you mix them all together and bake them, I do love warm fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up that we don't like, when life gets hard, when we don't understand what you're saying to us, help us to just relax and wait until you are done mixing. It will probably be even better than biscuits. Amen."

The Reading is from Luke 8:26-39

At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him.

And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed.

Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

I hope this will encourage you to work together with your pastor in making the gospel ever present in your heart, that it may be proclaimed to the world. Your pastor needs your prayers and support.
1. He loves God and you a lot. (Be mindful.)

3. He probably at times has a pretty low view of his own “performance”. (Be kind.)
4. He wishes he were a better preacher. (Be awake.)
5. He really does want God’s best for you and your family. (Be open-hearted.)

7. He often hears much more negative information than positive. (Be encouraging.)
8. He has chosen a vocation in which many leave . (Be praying.)
9. He has received from God a leadership-intensive call. (Be lead-able.)

11. His God-given vision is bigger than himself and the church. (Be faith-filled.)
12. He wants to personally meet all the needs, but knows he can’t. (Be understanding.)
13. He’s going to say some dumb things every now and then. (Be forgiving.)
14. His family is patient with you, so be patient with them. (Be conscientious.)
15. He is greatly encouraged by your faithfulness. (Be there.)
16. He is passionate for God’s Word to be experienced as a practical blessing to you. (Be hungry.)
17. He longs for church to be your spiritual oasis. (Be loving.)
18. He dreams for your and your family’s spiritual health. (Be receptive.)
19. He needs to hear that you prayed for him. (Be interceding.)
20. He’s just a regular guy. (Be real.)

And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!"

But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace."

While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.'

And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"
