Americans lost $29.8 billion to phone scams alone over the past year

Nearly 1 in 3 Americans say they’ve fallen victim to a phone scam in the past year, like the ones where someone calls pretending to be from the IRS or from a company inquiring about an expiring warranty on your vehicle.

That’s according to a new report from Truecaller that finds roughly 59.4 million Americans have lost money to phone scams over the past year. About 19% fell victim more than once, according to the report, which was undertaken in partnership with The Harris Poll in March 2021.

Cybercriminals have launched a large-scale 'smishing' (SMS-based phishing) campaign
Scammers are getting serious about texting.

Over the past few months, cybercriminals have launched a large-scale “smishing” (SMS-based phishing) campaign, according to a report from cybersecurity firm Digital Shadows.

In the samples analyzed by Digital Shadows, the scammers masqueraded as major brands including Amazon, USPS, FedEx, Cash App, Netflix, as well as adult entertainment services, unnamed delivery services and payment card or financial services. The SMS messages primarily originated from spoofed U.S. numbers, including 917, 765, 646, 470, 347 or 332 area codes.

Johnson says online shopping increased significantly during the coronavirus pandemic, and so did the number of reported scams.

The FBI recommends that consumers:

Be aware of unexpected emails and text messages. If the link looks suspicious, don’t click on it.
Ignore robocalls.
Research a company before booking with it.
Pay with a credit card instead of a debit card or cash.

We have all heard different versions of how a well-educated, respectable member of the community was somehow duped into sending large quantities of money to a complete stranger. Sometimes the person in the story has even lost their entire life savings. At first, we are shocked and dismayed, but then we pause and think to ourselves, “That could never happen to me!”

The Sweetheart Scam is one of the most widely utilized modes of preying upon a victim for financial gain. It’s a scheme that can be perpetrated online or in person. The scammer convinces their victim that they are in love and uses these emotions to bilk money from the unsuspecting person—oftentimes a lonely senior. This is all brilliantly orchestrated, like a maestro conducting a symphony.

Online Dating and Romance Scams
A recent study indicates that 15 percent of American adults use online dating websites or mobile applications. As the number of people looking to meet new people online grows, so does the opportunity for fraud.

Criminals who perpetrate online dating and romance scams use emotional appeals to quickly gain their victims’ trust and then, just as quickly, exploit it. Maria” signed up for an online dating service and was contacted by “Andrew,” who claimed to be an American overseas on business in Australia. Maria and Andrew seemed to hit it off and began planning a road trip for that summer when Andrew would come back to the U.S. Andrew sent Maria a check for $5,000 to cover the cost of their trip, but then suddenly asked her to send $4,500 back to him because he needed money for rent after being laid off from his job. Maria deposited the check and sent the money, but was soon contacted by her bank, which told her the check was bad and she had to repay the $4,500. On top of losing her money, the fake “Andrew” disappeared, and Maria never heard from him again.
The Phony Profile
Romance scammers often create a phony profile. The scammer may use photos from magazines and portray himself or herself as talented and successful. Fake profiles may have discrepancies or inconsistencies, like disproportionate height and weight, or be suspiciously vague. Romance scammers often claim to be a U.S. citizen working or serving abroad, or give a similar excuse to explain their inability to meet in person.
