Да, мне на файсбуке это попалось, вот мнение одного из знакомых
I try to take a balanced view of my own country. On the one hand, we fought on the side of the Allied powers to defeat the Axis powers in WWII. On on the other hand, we invaded Vietnam (w/o a declaration of war, no less) with a negative outcome for all involved.
I've heard Latinos describe Americans as "cold" and unfriendly, and my usual reply is, "Try visiting England, Russia, or Japan". I think Americans are about in the middle on the "warmth" scale.
I dislike the heavy amount of commercialism in the U.S., which manifests as ubiquitous advertising, materialism, and an obsession with status. If there's a bright side to "wanting to be the best", it's that we're very achievement-oriented. I wouldn't call that a "bad thing", though. A lot of inventions that ppl use (and love) have come from this country: light bulb, automobiles, the personal computer, the Internet, smart phones, others...
I think we are kind of paranoid as a country and I'm going to pull out an old canard and blame the media for helping to make us paranoid by "overselling" tragedies they report on. Ironically, I think the writer of this blog falls into the same trap of overselling the negative aspects of U.S. culture and may be turning a blind eye to the bright parts.
We're a bit narcissistic as a country. Ironically, Facebook with its prompting for status updates and it's system of 'Like's is overwhelmingly a product of an American culture. ("Somebody likes what I said!")
We're very ungrateful for what we have. I always enjoy talking to my Latino neighbors because many of them came from much more indigent circumstances and are grateful for what they have here. Oscar Wilde once said "America is the only country that has gone from barbarism to decadence without ever passing through civilisation between." There's probably some truth to that.
I worked once with a guy who grew up in communist Romania. He had a very different view of the world and it was always refreshing to talk to him. He told me this once: "In Romania, they had to build fences to keep people in. In the U.S., you guys try to build fences to keep people _out_. That's a pretty good gauge of whether a country is a nice place to live."
